The Windsor Lancer golf teams were finally back on the course Thursday, traveling to Western and the St. Thomas Golf & Country Club for the Western Invitational. In what was a perfect day of weather on the course, and the golf club showed its teeth on the greens as once again the field found the greens difficult to navigate.
On the men's side, the Lancers started the season on a positive note and had one of their best showings at the Western Invitational in quite some time. First year Lancer Thomas DeMarco, who was playing in his first OUA event, shot an even par 72 to finish in a three way tie for the gold.
Also playing in his first OUA event and playing a very steady round of golf was first year Lancer Nicholas Tanovich who finished with a 74 good for a T-6. Rounding out the scoring for the Lancers was
Jarrod Smith 78 (T-13), Chris Hennigar was 79 (T-18) and
Mark St. Jean was 87.
Overall the Lancers fell just short of the Guelph Gryphons by 3 shots and finished in the silver medal position. "I was very pleased with the performance of all of our players today. For not playing an event in almost two years it was great to be back out there and to have this result in our first event is very exciting for this group of players," said head coach
Adam Wagner.
On the ladies side it was an all-rookie team as all of the Lancer women were playing in their first OUA event. Leading the way for the blue and gold was Hannah Prieur who carded an 85 good for a T-4 finish just one shot out of a bronze medal and 5 shots back of the eventual winner. Kennedy Fremlin posted a 94 (T-13) and rounding out the scoring for the Lancers was Rachel Cote who finished the day at 99 (T-19).
"Not really knowing what to expect and for playing in their first OUA event I was extremely impressed with the way the ladies played and handled themselves on the golf course today." Having to count all three scores as the team scores the Lancers finished in 5th place overall.
Next up for the Lancers they are on the road at McMaster and King's Forest on Monday.
