Lancers fall short in first game of season

The Lancers fell short in their first game of the 2021 season with a 42-14 loss to the Waterloo Warriors at Warrior Field in Waterloo on Saturday. The game marked the safe return of play for both teams who took to the field for the first time since the fall of 2019, which was a momentous occasion in and of itself.

The loss moves the Lancers to 0-1 on the season as they head into their bye week in week two of competition.

STATS
Senior quarterback Sam Girard passed for 174 yards on 16 completions and one touchdown. David Adeniran rushed 49 yards, while receiver Alex Bornais had 65 receiving yards. Cole Verlinde let the way defensively for the blue and gold with 8 solo tackles.

The host Warriors were led by quarterback Tre Ford with 206 yards and one touchdown, and receiver James Basalyga with 96 yards and a touchdown.

GAME FLOW
After falling behind 40-0, the Lancers picked up some much-needed momentum to get on the board when Sam Girard completed an 8-yard pass to Callin Bethune, scoring the first Lancer touchdown of the 2021 campaign. Sam Richardson would go on to complete a successful kick which allowed the Lancers to cut the Waterloo lead to 40-7.

In the fourth quarter, Windsor rallied around one another feeling somewhat inspired after a couple of teammates went down after sustaining injuries in the second half of the game.  This caused a next man up mentality which allowed Adeniran to complete a 32-yard run and shrink the Waterloo lead to 42-13.  Richardson would again score an additional point of another kick through the uprights to make it 42-14.

UP NEXT
The blue and gold will head into their bye week next week, and return to action on Saturday, October 2nd when they host the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Stadium at 2:00pm. Tickets for the game go on sale on Monday, September 20th at noon at goLancers.ca/tickets.
