After two long years, the Lancer women's soccer team finally took the pitch on a rainy Wednesday night at Alumni Stadium. The game was action-packed and ended in a 0-0 thanks to the incredible work of Lancer goalkeeper
Lauren Gellner and the stunning defensive work by both squads.
STATS
Gellner was the star of the show as the Gryphons put 14 of their 18 shots on goal throughout the game. The Lancers took 9 shots, with four of them put on goal.
GAME FLOW
The first half was filled with numerous chances by both squads. Lancers
Jade Samping and
Emma Beaulieu were pushing consistently throughout the half and each player had a pair of their shots blocked by the Gryphons backline.
The Gryphons boasted a strong counterattack that forced Gellner to make some stellar saves that kept the game level at 0-0. Numerous changes were made to the line-up during halftime for both teams.
The Lancers went on the defensive during the second half, with chances on goal drastically reduced. The Gryphons were awarded numerous corners and free kicks during the half, keeping Gellner and the Lancer defense on their toes. The Lancers backline kept the Gryphons attack at bay by squashing the counter attack, and making some great tackles. A late spur of energy had the Lancers pushing forward, but some great defensive play by the Gryphons forced a turnover.
