Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Windsor sweeps Toronto in weekend series

The Lancer men's hockey team swept the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues in a weekend series at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

Windsor defeated the Blues 6-3 Friday and 4-3 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

With the wins, the Lancers are 5-1 on the season and in first place in the west division, while the Blues fall to 2-3-1.

FRIDAY
In their first meeting since February of 2020, the Blues created changes early in the game, but the Lancers were the ones who struck first on a power play goal from Jaydon Fetter just over nine minutes into the first period.

Toronto's Nick Grima tied the game late in the period to send the game into the intermission tied at one.

The Blues scored again just under seven minutes into the second on a rebound off of Torchia's pads, but the Lancers would not let their lead last long as Brady Pataki tied it up just 17 seconds later.

Despite the Blues scoring first again in the third, Windsor lit up the lamp four times in the final frame to take control of the game and leave the Blues searching for answers. Robbie Burt, Brady Pataki and Anthony Stefano with back-to-back goals, all found the back of the net to secure the Lancer victory.

Torchia made 20 saves in net to secure the win for the blue and gold.

SATURDAY
The Lancers came rushing towards the Varsity Blues with the same high intensity as Friday night's game. With the Varsity Blues on the run for redemption and the blue and gold looking to continue their winning streak, the matchup was set up to keep the crowd at the edge of their seats.

The first period saw plenty of penalties and scoring opportunities, yet no one was able to convert. The game went into the first intermission tied at zero.

Windsor opened the scoring seven minutes into the second with a goal from forward Matt McNamara. The Blues would answer with a goal of their own less than a minute later from first-year forward Zack Smith.

Halfway through the second period, Windsor forward Anthony Stefano would combine with forward Mason Kohn to give the Lancers the lead. The Blues would come storming back to score back-to-back goals from Ross Krieger and Kyle Potts, giving the Blues a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

Windsor tied the game 13 minutes into the final period, with a goal from Grant Spence. The game headed into extra time, but it didn't take the Lancers long to secure the victory as McNamara scored his second of the game just thirty seconds into the frame.
