Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

DeWolf-Russ Nets Two to Lead Lancers Past Gryphons for First Time in A Decade

The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team picked up a huge road victory of 2-1 on Friday night while visiting the Guelph Gryphons at the Gryphon Centre in Guelph.

Going into the Remembrance Day contest, the Lancers were 3-3 on the season and are now currently riding a four-game winning streak.  Maggie DeWolf-Russ picked up her second and third goals on the campaign to help lead the lady Lancers to their first win against the Gryphons in 10 years.  Prior to the match up, the Lancers had not defeated Guelph since November 11th, 2012, when they won 2-0 in Guelph, exactly a decade before entering this game's first face-off.

GAME FLOW
In the first period, there was no scoring as Lancers goalie Kristin Swiatoschik turned aside all 7 shots from the Gryphons who outshot the blue and gold 7 to 6 after the first 20 minutes of play.

While it took until the second period to break open the goose egg on the scoreboard, both teams traded equally strong scoring opportunities before DeWolf-Russ managed to snipe a shot that beat the Guelph goaltender Martina Fedel and lift the Lancers to a 1-0 lead.  Rylee Hogan picked up her first assist of the night and Maggie Mitani also managed to grab an assist on the play.

Later in the period however, Tori Verbeek managed to score for Guelph to tie up the game at 1-1.  But a little over two minutes after the Guelph goal DeWolf-Russ decided that she was not done scoring yet as she responded with a pass from Hogan to restore the Lancer lead to 2-1.

The third period saw no additional goals just tremendous stops from Swiatoschik and her Gryphon goalie counterpart which ultimately allowed the Lancers to hold on and secure the historic victory snapping a 10-year drought against the Gryphons.  The Lancers now improve to 4-3 on the season.
