The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team was able to extend their current winning streak to 6 consecutive games won after managing to hold on to defeat their 401 rivals the Western Mustangs on home ice on Friday night.
Jaden Cherry scored the lone goal in the first period to seal the deal for the Lancers while goaltender Kristin Swiatoschik backstopped the blue and gold turning aside all 25 shots that came her way from Western. Swiatoschik also notably picked up her second shutout on the year with her terrific steady play all night and 25 save performance to not allow the purple sweaters to score at all in this close contest.
GAME FLOW
The first frame saw the most scoring action with both teams exchanging chances challenging both Swiatoschik and Western netminder Kaitlyn Booth. However, it was Swiatoschik who would remain flawless on the scoresheet as Booth was beat at 11:26 of the first frame by Cherry who put her third of the season into the Mustangs net and put the eventual cherry on top in this Friday night affair.
The second period saw equally great scoring opportunities for both sides, but defence outdid offence throughout resulting in no additional goals being racked up on the scoresheet. While in the third although the same could be said, goaltending stole the show as Swiatoschik was able to lead her team effectively and close out the first match up between this teams this season at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex with a 1-0 win. The well-rounded team effort by the Lancer ladies improves their record now to 5-2-1 on the campaign while the Mustangs drop to 3-4-1.
UP NEXT
Both teams will now meet up again in 24 hours but switch venues as the home-and-home series shifts two hours east of the 401 to London for another exciting matchup between these two squads. The rematch from the Thompson Arena is scheduled for 7:00pm puck drop, and the game can be caught live on OUA.tv Saturday night for fans of the blue and gold to stream the action.
