Lancers defeat Hawks in overtime, sweep series

Coming off of a solid victory Friday night over the Laurier Golden Hawks, the Lancer women's hockey team continued their winnings ways with a 3-2 overtime win over the Hawks Saturday afternoon at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

STATS
Holly Borrett had a solid day in net, turning aside 15 shots sent her way. Windsor goal scorers included Paige McArthur, Jessica Gribbon and Maggi DeWolf-Russ with the game winner in extra time.

GAME FLOW
Both teams had their fair share of chances in the first period of today's game. The Lancer's best opportunity came fourteen minutes in when Jessica Gribbon made an incredible move around a Laurier defender. The shot was saved, but it got the fans in attendance on their feet and gave the Lancers some momentum. Jaden Cherry, Amy Maitre, and Paige McArthur continued to put consistent pressure on the Golden Hawks goaltender. The first period would end scoreless, with the Lancers out shooting the Hawks 14-6.

The blue and gold continued to out play the Hawks, applying pressure to Hawk goaltender Victoria Kelaiditis and trying to capitalize on the multiple rebound opportunities around the Laurier net. The Golden Hawks got on the board first at 12:08 of the frame with a goal from Kenedy Choma. Windsor finally found the back of the net when McArthur had a nice touch in front of the net at 17:08 to tie the game. Their second goal would come just seconds later when Gribbon scored her first of the season over the right shoulder of Kelaiditis. Windsor went into the intermission up 2-1.

The fast-paced action would continue into the third period with minimal whistles and minimal penalties. Laurier tied the game with three minutes left in the period to send the game into overtime. It didn't take long into the extra frame for Maggi DeWolf-Russ to find the back of the net and lift the Lancers over the Hawks and sweep the weekend series.
