Lancer Basketball Playoff Preview

By Mia Ines

The Windsor Lancers men and women's basketball team finished the 2021-2022 OUA regular season and look forward to getting back on the court after both teams secured a spot in the playoffs.

The men's basketball team hopped on a flight to Thunder Bay to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves, while the women's team headed up the 401 to Guelph for a round one contest against the Gryphons.

The ability for both squads to play well in a visiting gyms when the pressure is on will be a  reflection of them sticking to the game plan and topping it off with confidence and finesse. In all of the difficult situations faced this year, the blue and gold know what they are capable of and just need to follow through.

This year, the Lancer men curated a number of wins, finishing with a 7-9 record, and 6th overall in the OUA west division. However, two of their losses did come at the hands of the Thunderwolves just two weeks ago. Head coach Chris Cheng will look to senior forward Thomas Kennedy to lead the Lancer offence. Kennedy leads the league in rebounds per game, while also sitting in the top five in points per game and free throw percentage, will use his experience and help the team towards a potential win to continue their journey in the playoffs. With their familiar experience playing against the Thunderwolves, the Lancers can look to adjust their game plan from a few weeks ago and use the new strategy to defeat the Thunderwolves on home court and advance to the next round.

On the women's side, the Lancers have their work cut out for them as they face the No. 10 ranked Gryphons. The blue and gold have not seen the Gryphons since the first week of the OUA regular season when they dropped the pair of home-and-home games. Windsor has come a long way since then and have been well-known for their strong comebacks. They ended the OUA regular season with four major wins to help them finish 6-10 overall and 6th in the OUA west division. Coach Vallee will look to seniors Maggie Denys, Sofia Kennedy, and Harriet Carey to lead the charge, while also giving minutes to Mariame Dehkissia and Reighan Dales.

Both teams will tip-off at 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 16th in their respective contests as they look to take down the Thunderwolves and Gryphons. Catch the playoff action live at www.OUA.tv.
