Warriors come from behind to defeat Lancers

The Windsor Lancers hosted the visiting Waterloo Warriors at the Toldo Lancer Centre on Saturday afternoon. Heading into the game on a three game win streak, the Lancers were looking to make it four straight, but unfortunately for the blue an gold, a strong fourth quarter from the visitors gave them the 55-50 win over Windsor.

STATS
Harriet Carey led the way for the Lancers with 14 points and five rebounds, while Isabella Anes also landed in double digits with 10 points.

GAME FLOW
To open the frame, the Waterloo Warriors moved quick up the court as they scored the first bucket of the game. Shortly after, Julia Chairot went up for a clean layup and Anes completed a jumper from outside the arc to takeover the lead. The Warriors and Lancers went on a back and forth battle to respond early in the match-up. For a good rush, Anes connected with Carey for a smooth three to pick-up some points. Once again, Carey was able to make another long-range shot to make a strong impact for the team. After a foul was called on Waterloo, the blue and gold was able to open up their scoring with Carey taking three shots from the line. After the first quarter, Windsor led 17-15.

In the second quarter, the Lancers and Warriors began to increase the physicality as the blue and gold were determined to defend their home court. Waterloo would find themselves 5-points behind with seven minutes remaining as they struggled to get through the Windsor zone. Mya Iriah shot in favour of the Lancers as she was able to get the ball to fall through and keep the squad on top. With under two minutes to go, Reine Ndome worked her way through the Warrior's defense to hit a two. The blue and gold displayed their confidence with the support of the Lancer fans and headed into halftime, 29-24.

The third quarter saw Windsor continue to expand upon their lead as Julia Chiarot put-up the first two baskets including a 3-pointer. Looking to find space on the court, Anes followed up with a two of her own to help the blue and gold take control early in this frame. Carey added to her total points with her third 3-pointer of the evening to get the Lancer fans up on their feet. The Warriors were called for several foul and would find themselves in a deficit, struggling to gain momentum. Windsor led by one heading into the fourth quarter where both teams would battle it down to the final buzzer to determine who would take the game.

The last quarter has both teams on edge as the Warriors brough themselves within striking distance. Waterloo stormed up the court to get fourth year guard Vanessa Hughes some points in the paint and manage to takeover the lead 50-43 with six minutes left in regulation. In the end, the Lancers win streak was broken as they dropped a 55-50 decision.
