The Lancer softball team secured a second place position in the West Division leading into their playoff tournament next weekend with a split against the Brock Badgers on Sunday while they celebrated Senior's Day. Game scores were a 6-5 loss and a 10-2 win.
GAME ONE
The first game began with a quick scoreless inning for both teams and it was obvious that the game was going to be a close battle. The Lancers scored first in the bottom of the second on a triple from
Emma Hanley and an RBI from
Cylee Hickey to cash the run. The Lancers added to their lead in the third inning with doubles from
Jacqueline Pento and
Emma Hanley and a single from
Soleen DePape to extend their lead to 5.
The Badgers responded with three runs of their own the following inning and both teams couldn't add another run across the board until the top of the seventh inning when Brock mounted a comeback to take the lead. Unfortunately, the Blue & Gold couldn't capitalize on a bases loaded situation that came from a single from
Morgan Maxey and walks drawn by
McKay Colombe and
Emma Hanley.
GAME TWO
The Lancers rebounded for the second game of the doubleheader with something to prove and their seeding into the playoff tournament riding on a win. The blue & gold pushed a couple runs across in the top of the first on a walk from
Ella Duncan-Reda, a sacrifice bunt from
Soleen DePape, a single from
McKay Colombe, and a double from
Megan Lozinski.
The Lancers added to their lead in the third inning on hits from
McKay Colombe,
Megan Lozinski, and
Cylee Hickey to put them up 6-0. Brock responded with a run of their own in the third, but the Lancers weren't done yet and continued piling them on. In the fourth inning, a hit parade consisting of
Morgan Maxey,
McKay Colombe,
Emma Hanley, and
Rylie Straus brought the score to 9-1. The Badgers squeaked another run by in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lancers once again responded with a run of their own on a single from
Morgan Maxey and a triple from
Emma Hanley to extend their lead again.
The game ended after five innings in a mercy situation and the win locked in the Lancers' second place seeding heading into next weekend's playoff tournament.
Morgan Maxey earned the win from the mound (4.0 IP, 5H, 2ER) while
Megan Lozinski earned the save to close the game.
