Softball splits weekend with McMaster

The No. 5 Lancer softball team split their series with the McMaster Marauders on Saturday in their home opener of the 2023 season. The blue & gold lost 8-1 and won 11-3 as both teams honoured National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in their pre-game ceremony and wore orange ribbons throughout the games.

GAME 1
The Marauders came out strong right off the bat and scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning. The Lancer defence held them for the next couple of innings until McMaster added on another five runs in the fourth inning. The Lancers' sole run came from a beautiful line drive home run from Aubrey Johnson in the top of the fifth, but the response was too little, too late for a comeback. Other game highlights include singles from Jacqueline Pento and Megan Lozinski

GAME 2
The Lancers came out strong in the second game of the double header and cashed three runs in the top of the 1st on singles from Jacqueline Pento, a bunt single from Soleen DePape, and a triple from McKay Colombe. A couple of errors and hits by Jacqueline Pento and Ella Duncan-Reda cashed another two runs in the second inning to extend the Lancer lead. In the bottom of the third, the Marauders responded with three doubles in a row to score two runs and cut the Lancer lead to three. The fourth was a big inning for the Lancers as they scored three more runs on singles from Jacqueline Pento, Ella Duncan-Reda, McKay Colombe, and Cylee Hickey. Both teams scored another run in the sixth inning, the Lancer run coming on doubles from McKay Colombe and Tia Nelson. The blue & gold got two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh and held the Marauders in the bottom of the inning to close out the game and get back in the win column. From the mound, Megan Lozinski earned the win, giving up three runs and striking out seven batters in seven innings of work.

SUNDAY
The Lancers were slated to take on the Brock Badgers on Sunday, but the games were postponed to a later date due to unforeseen circumstances.
