The Lancer softball team's season came to an end after being knocked out early in the double elimination OUS Championship tournament.
GAME ONE
The first game of the tournament saw the Lancers take on the returning OUS Champions - the Queen's Gaels. The Gaels struck early, putting up a run in the top of the first inning. The blue and gold corralled the Queen's offense for the next inning to shut them down, but the Gaels struck again in the third inning to put them up 3-0.
The fourth inning saw another three runs added to the Gaels' tally. The Lancers responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a double from
McKay Colombe to cash the baserunner,
Morgan Maxey. The Gaels tacked on another insurance run in the sixth inning and the Lancers couldn't respond, dropping the contest 7-1. Highlights of the game for the Lancers included a single from
Ella Duncan-Reda and an amazing catch in right field for
Rylie Straus.
GAME TWO
An elimination game for both teams, the game was a rematch of last weekend's regular season finale where the Lancers took on the Brock Badgers. Brock came out hot, scoring 5 runs in the top of the first inning. The Lancers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on singles from
Soleen DePape,
Morgan Maxey,
Aubrey Johnson, and a double from
McKay Colombe.
Windsor shut down the Badger offense in the second inning on a double play from
Cylee Hickey to get back to the bats quickly with momentum shifting. The Lancers tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Runs came on walks from
Ella Duncan-Reda and
Morgan Maxey, a sacrifice bunt from
Soleen DePape, a double from
McKay Colombe, and an RBI from
Emma Hanley. Brock piled on another six runs over the next few innings to take another commanding lead, but Windsor once again proved that they can hit too.
The Lancers responded in the fifth with another double from
McKay Colombe and an RBI from
Megan Lozinski to cash Colombe. In the sixth, singles from
Aubrey Johnson,
Ella Duncan-Reda, and
McKay Colombe cashed 2 more runs, still down by 2 runs heading into the final frame. The blue and gold had to score in the seventh to stay alive in the tournament, so they took advantage of some Brock errors and a hit by
Ella Duncan-Reda to tie the game and send the game into extra innings. A 2-run homerun from the Badgers in the top of the eighth put them up by 2 and the Lancers responded but could only push across one run on a single from
Emma Hanley to drop the game 13-12 in a heartbreaking loss.
The Lancers would like to thank their coaches, families, and fans for their support this season. Stay tuned to goLancers.ca for next season schedules and information.
