Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer picks up point at home heading into post season

The women's soccer team saw the pitch twice this weekend, facing the McMaster Marauders (3-2) and the Laurier Golden Hawks (0-0).

While the Lancers were on the road Friday, the team returned to Alumni Field on Sunday for Senior's Day to recognize their graduating athletes who are playing in their final regular season home game. Graduates of the women's soccer team this year include Jordan Samping, Faith Akinkuade, Haley Smith, Natalie Hogeterp, and Elizabeth Elliott. The seniors had outstanding careers at the University of Windsor and are wished the best of luck in the future.

HOW IT HAPPENED FRIDAY
The blue and gold started the weekend on the road against the McMaster Marauders. The Lancers charged out of the gate with fire under their feet as Aislynn Essibrah and Kailyn Roberston secured two quick goals in the first 5 minutes of play. However, only moments before halftime Windsor was dealt a red card where McMaster then capitalized on a free kick to lessen the gap and make the score 2-1.

In the 68th minute McMaster leveled the playing field with a strike into the Lancer goal. Despite a hard-fought battle, the blue and gold came up short as McMaster sealed the deal in the 81st minute of play by adding their third and winning tally.

HOW IT HAPPENED SUNDAY
The team shifted gears on Sunday while taking on the Laurier Golden Hawks at home. With both teams entering the game with a 5-4-2 record, they would battle for home-field advantage for their first playoff game later this week.

Although the first half saw no score, there was an exchange of offensive opportunities for both sides. Teams were determined to defend their houses with a playoff at-home advantage on the line. On the defensive end for the Lancers, Claire Pozzi had a standout showing, sweeping the back line clear of any danger posed by the Golden Hawks.

The second half was a similar scene as fans eagerly waited for the double goose eggs on the scoreboard to be cracked. Laurier parked the bus with a defensive formation to keep the blue and gold out of Golden Hawk's territory. On the other side of the pitch, in the 78th minute, Avery Ward came in clutch for the Lancers by blocking a prime goal-scoring opportunity for the Golden Hawks with her knees. Ultimately, neither side found the back of the net, leaving the double zeroes on the board. This also meant that goalkeeper Izzy Barrette was able to secure her first shutout victory of the season for the Lancers.
