The Windsor Lancer women's hockey team were back in action again this weekend on Remembrance Day for a solo road game in London against the Western Mustangs.
Â
The blue and gold went into extra time against the purple and white dropping a 3-2 overtime contest to the Mustangs who saw Haylie Kirkpatrick as the hero for Western in this recent installment of the battle of the 401.
Â
STATS
Elissa Benjamin scored both Lancer goals with one coming in the first period and the other in the third.Â
Â
Maggie Mitani,
Keana McKibbin, and
Makayla Mailhot had the helpers on Benjamin's pair of goals in the loss to the Mustangs.
Â
Meanwhile between the pipes,
Cadence Petitclerc stood tall in her crease and made 39 saves despite the overtime loss to Western.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Benjamin would be the first scorer of the game from Mitani at the 15:54 mark of the first period when her first goal got by Western's netminder Brooke Vaccari to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
Â
The remainder of the first period went without any further goals allowing the Lancers to ride the one goal lead into the second period.Â
Â
At 16:12 of the second period, Alyssa Wouda would respond for the Mustangs with her game tying goal to knot things up at 1-1.Â
Â
No goals came after Wouda's goal for Western which kept a goal apiece stalemate intact heading into the second intermission and kick off the third period on a tied note.
Â
Benjamin would then score her goal of the game getting past Vaccari for the second time on the day with help from McKibbin and Mailhot at 6:39 of the third period to give the Lancers back the lead at 2-1.Â
Â
The go-ahead goal gave the Lancer ladies some good momentum within the next few minutes until Western's Adeline Kristoff responded with her equalizing marker at 9:08 getting the puck past Peticlerc and restoring a tied hockey game at 2-2.
Â
No further goals were scored to round out regulation play despite both sides trading scoring opportunities for which each goaltender stood tall in their respective creases.Â
Â
In overtime the Mustangs were able to generate a golden opportunity while in the Windsor zone during 3-on-3 overtime action when Reese Whiteman fed Kirkpatrick who cashed in on the scoring play to become the hero in this contest and grant the Mustangs a 3-2 win over the Lancers.
