Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball drops nail-biter to Marauders

The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team hosted the McMaster Marauders on Saturday afternoon at the Toldo Lancer Centre in their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day game.  The Marauders were able to spoil the party of the Lancers' good cause by taking home a 48-46 nail-biting victory over the hosts.

STATS
Mariame Dehkissia and Kali Grootenboer each led the Lancers in scoring with 9 points each despite the loss.  Grootenboer also had 7 rebounds and 2 blocks leading the lady Lancers in the match.

Harriet Carey also snagged 9 rebounds for the blue and gold and the Australian import had 7 points in the hard-fought effort that came up just short to McMaster.

Sarah Gates was the story of the game from start to finish leading the charge for the Marauders with a whopping 25 points and surpassing the McMaster women's basketball all-time scoring record that was previously set at 1720 and now sits at 1726 held by none other than Gates.

The Windsor Lancers would like to again extend a sincere congratulations to Gates and her family on achieving such a rare and marvelous milestone accomplishment in her successful OUA career.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers were outmatched by the Marauders in the first quarter who were able to get off to a hot start courtesy of Gates who netted the majority of the maroon and grey's points.  The pace of the game ramped up as the quarter went on, but McMaster was able to close out the first quarter up 13-6 over the blue and gold.

Windsor would recover in the second quarter bouncing back with more opportunities to shoot free throws to get back into the game.  They elevated their play tremendously to challenge McMaster to sustain their lead.  However, heading into halftime the Lancers outplayed the Marauders in the second quarter to swipe away the Mac lead and make it their own by closing out the first half 25-22 in front of the home crowd.

The third quarter saw the action remain close once again as both teams were able to put up points to make things close to start the second half.  With both sides trading buckets, the Marauders were able to best the Lancers coming out of the third with a slim 37-36 one-point lead intact.

The final frame featured no shortage of intensity as both squads exchanged points yet again and in a fight to the finish saw McMaster able to narrowly hold on down the stretch courtesy of Gates' two free throw daggers in which one fell into the mesh to polish off the historic night for her with a 48-46 final from Windsor.

The loss now puts the Lancers record to 8-9 on the year while the Marauders extend their winning streak to 9 straight games won and improve their overall record to 14-4.
