Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong second half lifts Lancers over Lions

The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team rounded out their weekend homestead with a Sunday afternoon matchup against the York Lions at the Toldo Lancer Centre.

The blue and gold were successfully able to complete a comeback to earn an exciting 69-65 win over the visitors in front of another solid home crowd at the TLC on hand.

STATS
Harriet Carey scored 25 points off the bench in the victory to help bring back the Lancers in the second half who trailed throughout the first half.

Carey had some clutch three-pointers down the stretch that made a difference in her squad's momentum and went 6-8 at the foul line.

Kali Grootenbeor also had a huge game recording a double-double in netting 15 points of her own and grabbing 10 rebounds. Grootenbeor went 6-9 from the field and 3-4 on free throws from the charity stripe.

York was led by Windsor native Lauren Golding who had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to her hometown team.

GAME FLOW
In the first quarter, the Lions pounced out to a 10-0 start after Golding opened the scoring of the game well before the Lancers were able to make their first basket.  The Lancers found themselves in trouble to the Lions who kept a stronghold on the home team closing out the quarter down 23-11 to the visitors.

The second quarter saw better effort from the blue and gold who were able to stay within an arm's length of the Lions lead throughout shrinking the deficit to as low as 4 in the quarter.  York was able to keep their foot on the gas by consistency and determination to maintain the red and white team's lead heading into halftime up 32-28.

The start of the second half saw the Lancers outscore the Lions 21-12 in the third quarter and showcased the bulk of Carey's fantastic performance as she ignited her play to find the ball through the hoop on several occasions from outside the arch to inside the paint to from the foul line including drawing a three-point foul shot play that she successfully completed from the free-throw line.

Carey's impressive play helped spark her team's morale to fight their way back into the contest and only lead 49-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter of action proved to be a real test to the finish for both teams as the Lancers saw great offensive contributions from Mariame Dehkissia, Maggie Denys, and Julia Chariot. However, it was Grootenbeor who helped to get the Lancers across the finish line with the win making a combination of successful shots including two jump shots and layup to all but seal the deal.  The Lancers would trade the lead with the Lions on a couple of transition plays but ultimately were able to battle back resiliently to come out of the match on top thanks to Grootenbeor and Carey's closing performances to polish off the Lions with a 69-65 comeback victory over York.
