Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Lancers shutout Thunderwolves to kick off Western Conference Finals

The Windsor Lancer men's hockey team hosted the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Wednesday night in game one of the OUA Western Conference finals. The blue and gold would dominate from the start and pull away with a 4-0 victory at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Centre.

STATS
Grant Spence, Keegan McMullen, Sean Olson, and Mason Kohn picked up a goal each while in the net Nathan Torchia was a story for the Lancers with 27 saves for a perfect sheet.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers came out roaring and got to work early as second year Grant Spence grabbed the first goal of the game to put Windsor up 1-0 just 2:32 into the game. Although Lakehead created a number of scoring chances for themselves, the blue and gold's defense stayed with the puck to prevent them from capitalizing on anything. Lakehead's Greg Smith had the team's best chance shooting a rocket towards Torchia, but it was redirected to the boards. Windsor held the 1-0 advantage heading into the second.

The second period saw both teams play aggressively but still manage to stay out of the penalty box. The first, and only, penalty of the game was called with ten seconds remaining in the period to give the Thunderwolves the only power play opportunity of the match. Windsor continued to lead 1-0 after forty minutes of play.

Windsor finally broke through the wall that was Lakehead goaltender Max Wright midway through the final frame. Anthony Stefano went for the stretch pass creating a promising opportunity for Keegan McMullen who was able to chip the puck past the outstretched glove of Wright and give Windsor a 2-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, the blue and gold activated the offense again as Sean Olson shot the puck past traffic, extending the lead to three. With Wright on the bench in favour of the extra attacker, Mason Kohn fired the puck into empty net to secure the game, 4-0.
