Softball falls to No. 2 Mustangs

The No. 5 Lancer softball team lost both games of their doubleheader against the No. 2 Western Mustangs on Saturday in London. The final scores of the games were 5-4 and 9-4 in favour of the Mustangs.

GAME 1
The Mustangs came out strong in the 1st inning, capitalizing on some Lancer errors, a walk, and some timely hits to score 3 runs. The Lancers did not give up and battled to break through a tough Mustang defence, getting a lot of runners on base but not able to cash those runs.

The Blue & Gold hunkered down and kept the big bats of Western from scoring anymore runs for the next 5 innings. In the top of the 5th inning, the Lancers broke through and scored 4 runs on doubles from Cylee Hickey and Emma Hanley, a single from Jacqueline Pento, and a walk from McKay Colombe. Up by 1 run, the Lancers held the Mustangs in the bottom of the inning and the score stayed 4-3 for the Lancers until the bottom of the 6th inning.

In the bottom of the 6th, a Mustangs walk, a couple errors, and a couple more hard hits from Western allowed them to take the lead again. The Lancers could not complete the comeback in the following inning, losing the game 5-4. Megan Lozinski was on the mound for the Lancers and gave up 7 hits with 0 earned runs.

GAME 2
The Lancers came out in the 2nd game of the doubleheaders ready for revenge. They scored in the bottom of the 1stt inning, with walks drawn by Cylee Hickey, Emma Duncan-Reda, McKay Colombe, and Emma Hanley plus a single from Morgan Maxey to bring the Lancer lead to three.

The Mustangs responded and cashed 2 runs of their own the following inning. The Lancers scored their 4th and final run in the 2nd inning with a Mustangs error to put Cylee Hickey on base, a sacrifice bunt from Soleen DePape, and a single from Ella Duncan-Reda to score Hickey. The Mustangs kept their foot on the gas after that, scoring 5 more runs in the 3rd inning.

Over the next few innings, Western scored 2 more runs and the Lancers didn't respond, losing the 2nd game 9-4.

UP NEXT
The Lancers have their home opener next weekend with games at 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, September 30th when they host the McMaster Marauders at Mic Mac Park.
