The No. 5 Lancer softball team lost both games of their doubleheader against the No. 2 Western Mustangs on Saturday in London. The final scores of the games were 5-4 and 9-4 in favour of the Mustangs.
GAME 1
The Mustangs came out strong in the 1st inning, capitalizing on some Lancer errors, a walk, and some timely hits to score 3 runs. The Lancers did not give up and battled to break through a tough Mustang defence, getting a lot of runners on base but not able to cash those runs.
The Blue & Gold hunkered down and kept the big bats of Western from scoring anymore runs for the next 5 innings. In the top of the 5th inning, the Lancers broke through and scored 4 runs on doubles from
Cylee Hickey and
Emma Hanley, a single from
Jacqueline Pento, and a walk from
McKay Colombe. Up by 1 run, the Lancers held the Mustangs in the bottom of the inning and the score stayed 4-3 for the Lancers until the bottom of the 6th inning.
In the bottom of the 6th, a Mustangs walk, a couple errors, and a couple more hard hits from Western allowed them to take the lead again. The Lancers could not complete the comeback in the following inning, losing the game 5-4.
Megan Lozinski was on the mound for the Lancers and gave up 7 hits with 0 earned runs.
GAME 2
The Lancers came out in the 2nd game of the doubleheaders ready for revenge. They scored in the bottom of the 1st
t inning, with walks drawn by
Cylee Hickey, Emma Duncan-Reda,
McKay Colombe, and
Emma Hanley plus a single from
Morgan Maxey to bring the Lancer lead to three.
The Mustangs responded and cashed 2 runs of their own the following inning. The Lancers scored their 4th and final run in the 2nd inning with a Mustangs error to put
Cylee Hickey on base, a sacrifice bunt from
Soleen DePape, and a single from
Ella Duncan-Reda to score Hickey. The Mustangs kept their foot on the gas after that, scoring 5 more runs in the 3rd inning.
Over the next few innings, Western scored 2 more runs and the Lancers didn't respond, losing the 2nd game 9-4.
