The Windsor Lancer women's hockey team were back in action again this past weekend taking a journey up the 401 East to take on the Queen's Gaels on Friday night earning a 4-2 win up in Kingston before venturing down to Oshawa to take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday afternoon in what was a 4-3 win for Windsor.
WEEKEND STATS
Elissa Benjamin score two goals against Queen's while the Lancer goal scorers on Friday were
Jaden Cherry and
Maggi DeWolf-Russ.
Between the pipes,
Cadence Petitclerc made 41 saves which helped to secure the win over the Gaels.
Meanwhile on Saturday
Maggie Mitani,
Teagan Pare,
Keana McKibbin, and
Makayla Mailhot scored for the Lancers.
In goal,
Rebecca Noble earned a win with her 11 save performance that backstopped the Lancers to pick up a second straight road victory over the weekend.
FRIDAY GAME FLOW
Windsor opened the scoring at 9:34 of the first period with Benjamin's first goal coming then unassisted to make it a 1-0 game over Queen's which remained in effect through to the first intermission.
In the second period, Queen's responded at the 4:02 mark with Logan Biggs scoring her first goal of the game on the power play to tie up the contest at 1-1.
The Lancers would respond with goal against the Gaels penalty killers with Benjamin earning her second goal of the game to regain the one goal lead and make it 2-1 on the power play from
Emily Eikelboom's assist at 9:53 in the second period which gave the Lancers a one goal lead going into the third period with.
Coming out of the gate in the third period 27 seconds in Briggs would notch her second goal of the game giving both sides one lone skater goal scorer still with two goals scored in the contest and a 2-2 even deadlock.
Cherry would break the tie at 4:38 into the final period of regulation in what became the eventual game winning goal from
Madison Hollohan and Mitani to make it a 3-1 Lancer lead. DeWolf-Russ would add an unassisted empty netter with 8 seconds left in the game to seal the deal for the Lancers to earn a 4-2 road win over the Gaels.
SATURDAY GAME FLOW
The Lancers would strike first on the power play against Ontario Tech with Mitani's goal scored at 2:32 from
Maggie Peterson and Pare drawing assists to make it a 1-0 Windsor lead up on the Ridgebacks.
The Lancers would then go on to double up their lead at 5:17 in the first with Pare's goal being netted past Ontario Tech's goaltender Ariella Merlino to make it a 2-0 lead. Cherry and Peterson each recorded an assist on Pare's goal for Windsor.
The Ridgebacks would bite back on the power play at 15:33 in the first with Harrie Jones scoring for Ontario Tech to cut the deficit in half and make it a 2-1 hockey game.
The hosts would tie up the contest with Julia Jackson's goal for the Ridgebacks at 19:11 in the first to head into the dressing room stalemated at 2-2.
McKibbin's marker came at 2:11 in the second period from DeWolf-Russ and
Bridget Cameron to regain the Lancers lead and make it a 3-2 game.
A little later in the second, Jones would net her second goal of the game on the power play to restore a tied-up hockey game this time at 3-3 going into the third period tied.
The game winning goal came off the stick of Eikelboom to Mailhot who scored the game winner at the 9:27 mark of the third period to stave off overtime and earn a 4-3 lead which stayed intact right until the final horn.
With the pair of road wins this weekend the Lancers now improve to 5-3 on the campaign.
