Maitre named women's hockey assistant coach

The Department of Athletics and Lancer women's hockey head coach Deanna Iwanicka are pleased to announce the hiring of new full-time assistant coach Amy Maitre.

No stranger to the blue & gold, the Maidstone, Ontario native suited up for five seasons as a defender with the Windsor Lancers from 2016 to 2022, racking up twenty-five points while being appointed assistant captain for three of those years. Following her playing career, she returned to the team as volunteer assistant coach, while also coaching for Prospect Athletics.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to offer this position" coach Iwanicka remarks. "Amy is an ideal candidate, as a former Lancer herself and then volunteer assistant coach. She has been working on her craft as a coach, and I believe has great potential in this profession.  I am thankful that we can be a part of her journey."

In her new position with the Lancers, Maitre will be coaching on a full-time basis, including day-to-day operations with the team and coaches, as well as recruitment and program administration. This may include practice planning, player development, monitoring the physical and mental health of athletes, program marketing and more. As an apprentice, she will have an opportunity to learn and experience the many diverse aspects involved with running a university athletic program.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to work with the women's hockey program and help build upon the progress the program has made over the last few seasons," said Maitre. "I look forward to continuing to develop as a coach and working with Coach Iwanicka as well as the entire staff."

Named the Lancer women's hockey team MVP for the 2019-20 season, Maitre was a five-time U SPORTS academic all-Canadian who graduated from UWindsor with a degree in Human Kinetics. She played 101 career games and was honoured by the team with her jersey being framed and hung on the locker room wall upon her graduation.

Maitre's hiring was made possible through the Coaches Association of Ontario female apprentice coach grant. "We are very thankful for the grant funding from the CAO to support the hiring of a female apprentice coach," said director of athletics Stephanie White. "We are also grateful for the support of our campus community as we work to exemplify equitable recruitment and hiring practices within Lancer Athletics. I believe in this program; it has proven to be a support pathway in the development of female coaches."
