Softball goes 5-1 on weekend road trip

The Lancer Softball team had a great travel weekend, going 5-1 and working their way into the 2nd place spot in the west division as they near the halfway point in the season. Fantastic offense, defense, and energy propelled the team through the busy weekend.

Friday, Game 1
Friday night of the weekend saw the blue & gold meet the Brock Badgers in St. Catherine's under the lights. Against a powerful Badger offense, the Lancers knew they had to strike early to come out on top. Singles from Bree Lee and Jacqueline Pento and a double from Emma Hanley helped the Lancers to a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. The Badgers responded with one of their own in the bottom of the frame but could not score again for the remainder of the game. Windsor built on their lead with timely hits from Soleen DePape, Jayde Melhuish-McGahan (2 singles), Cylee Hickey (triple), and Emma Hanley (sacrifice fly) to score valuable insurance runs.

Jayde Melhuish-McGahan was in the circle for the blue & gold and gave up 7 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 6 batters in the 6-1 victory.

Game 2
In the second game of the double header, both teams started out slow. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Lancer bats grew hot while the Badger defense struggled to put the blue & gold ahead 4-1 after three innings of play. Brock fought back and got one run back but couldn't sneak any runs past the plate after that. Windsor broke the game open in the bottom of the 5th with hits from Cylee Hickey, Allison Dufour, Soleen DePape, and Lauren Hickey to make the game 7-2. Some extra runs in the 6th made the game a mercy and the Lancers took the second game 10-2.
Allison Dufour earned the win from the mound, giving up seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts over the 6-inning game.

Saturday, Game 1
The blue & gold began Saturday's game against the McMaster Marauders the same way they ended the previous night, scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning on a McKay Colombe single. In the 2nd inning, Jayde Melhuish-McGahan hit a solo home run and Cylee Hickey, Emma Hanley, and McKay Colombe hit singles to extend the Lancer run differential to 4. The Marauders cashed one in the bottom of the frame to shrink the Lancer lead, but a single from Lauren Hickey, triple from Emma Hanley, and another single by McKay Colombe added to the lead once again for the final score to be a 6-1 win for the blue & gold.

Jayde Melhuish-McGahan earned the win in the circle with 7 hits, 1 earned run, and 4 strikeouts in 7 innings of work.

Game 2
The Lancers struck early again in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader with an Aubrey Johnson single and a Lauren Hickey double to claim a quick 2-0 lead. Sasha Vigneux singled, Emma Hanley laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, McKay Colombe singled, and Allison Dufour batted in a run to extend their lead to 4. A rally in the bottom of the 6th put the game in a mercy situation with hits from Aubrey Johnson, Cylee Hickey, Tia Nelson, Emma Hanley, and a walk-off triple from Ava Merritt to win the game 8-1.

Allison Dufour gave up an astounding 3 hits and 1 earned run in the 6-inning victory. She also recorded 4 strikeouts.

Sunday, Game 1
Going into Sunday morning, both the Lancers and Laurier Golden Hawks were undefeated. The expected close match ensued with a nailbiter ending. The Lancers struck first in the top of the 1st inning with a lead-off triple from Jayde Melhuish-McGahan and a McKay Colombe RBI single to give the blue & gold an early 1-0 lead. A Soleen DePape double, a Jacqueline Pento single, and a Laurier error made the score 2-0. The Golden Hawks responded with 3 runs of their own, to bring the score to 3-2 after 2 innings. The Blue & Gold capitalized on some Laurier errors to regain their lead 6-5. The Golden Hawks did not give up easily and rallied back to win the game in walk-off fashion 7-6.

Game 2
Looking for redemption, the Lancers came out in the second game with their foot on the gas pedal. An Allison Dufour double and an Ella Duncan-Reda triple got the blue & gold on the board early. The 3rd inning consisted of a hit parade of singles from Jayde Melhuish-McGahan, McKay Colombe, Soleen DePape, Ella Duncan-Reda, Aubrey Johnson, Lauren Hickey, and Jayde Melhuish-McGahan again to bring the score to 8-0 after 3 innings. The Lancer defense held the Golden Hawks for 6 more outs to end the game in a mercy situation.

Allison Dufour earned the win from the mound with 2 hits and 0 earned runs over 5 innings of work.

It was a great weekend for the blue & gold and puts them a few steps closer to a playoff tournament berth.
