LANCERS SPLIT OVERTIME WEEKEND

The Lancers traveled up the 401 for a road stint this weekend, which saw them split two overtime thrillers against the Guelph Gryphons (2-1) and the Brock Badgers (3-4)

STATS

On Friday, Maggi DeWolf-Russ picked up an assist and the game winning goal in OT, while Teagan Pare netted the other. Both Ilena Ricker-Singh and Emily Eikelboom picked up assists, while Cadence Petitclerc turned aside 31 shots in the win.

On Saturday, Maggie Mitani, Pare and DeWolf-Russ all scored in the narrow overtime defeat at the hands of the Badgers. Makayla Mailhot, Keana McKibbin, Emily Eikelboom, Jaden Cherry all plotted one assist apiece, while Ilena Ricker-Singh nabbed two, and Petitclerc notched 18 saves.

FRIDAY GAME FLOW

Starting the weekend off, the Gryphons and Lancers displayed stalwart defense across the opening two periods, as the score remained tied at 0 throughout. It was only into the third when someone would break through, and it would be Guelph's Teghan MacRae firing one past Petitclerc to make the score 1-0.

The Lancers would waste no time, as less than two minutes later Teagan Pare would net one past the Gryphons, putting a tie back up on the scoreboard at 1-1. Things would get chippy towards the end of the third and all through overtime as 7 penalties we're traded across both teams.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 62nd minute when Maggi DeWolf-Russ buried one past the Guelph defense off a pass from Eikelboom, giving the Lancers an overtime victory, and DeWolf-Russ her second overtime clincher in seven days.

SATURDAY GAME FLOW

Coming off the overtime thriller, the Lancers slipped in the early goings, allowing Brock to net one past Leclerc after 11 minutes of play. As penalties filled the remainder of the first and beginning of the second, the score remained, before a sharp goal on the power play pushed the Badgers up by two.

Undeterred, the blue & gold continued to fight, and we're rewarded at the beginning of the third with a snipe by Mitani off the feed from Mailhot, bringing the score within one. Attempting to put the Lancers down for good, Brock pushed a third puck past Petitclerc nearly halfway through the third to up their lead.

The Lancers continued to battle, and with 4:30 left in the third, Pare sniped one into the back of the next, closing the score to 3-2. Still kicking, and with under 3 minutes to play, the overtime hero DeWolf-Russ slammed one through the defense off a diving pass from Ricker-Singh, to knot the game at 3-3.

The game pushed into the 4th period, and yet despite offensive pressure, the Badgers were able to capitalize on a Lancer turnover to hit the game winner off the top corner, sealing the blue and golds fate in the 4-3 loss.
