Playoff preview: OUA Women's soccer Round 1

The University of Windsor Lancers women's soccer team begins their playoff run as they match up against the OUA West fifth-place Laurier Golden Hawks in the first round of the OUA playoffs. Windsor will host the Golden Hawks on Wednesday, October 15 at 6 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in Windsor, Ont.

The Lancers earned their fourth-place OUA West finish with a 6-4-2 (W-L-T) record, led by a pair of three-game win streaks in September. Windsor will be looking for redemption after falling 1-0 to the York Lions in the first round last season. The Lancers have made the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, losing in the first round each of those years, all on the road. Their last home playoff game was in 2016, when the Lancers went all the way to the OUA Final Four.

The Lancers calling card this season has been their defensive play and goaltending. Windsor ranks second in the OUA with just nine goals allowed in 12 games, and goalkeeper Izzy Barrette's six clean sheets are tied for third. Barrette's .809 save percentage also ranks third in the league, as well as her 0.75 goals against average. Windsor's success will come from the net out, as they will look to limit Laurier's offensive attack.

Laurier comes into the game with a 5-3-4 record, finishing just one point behind the Lancers. They made the playoffs last season but lost 2-1 in the first round to McMaster. While not a top of the league offensive team, the Golden Hawks attack ranks higher than the Lancers, which will be a key point of emphasis on Wednesday night.

Laurier's 22 goals for rank eighth in the OUA, and their 16.5% shooting rate is tenth. They have an attack that can generate chances, as their 53 corner kicks were the ninth-most this season. Like Windsor, Laurier also has strong defensive numbers, with 11 goals allowed in their 12 games played and seven clean sheets.

These teams last met in the playoffs in 2023, with Laurier pulling off a 2-1 win at home. The Lancers will be back by the Lancer faithful for the first time in nine years, in hopes of changing their fortunes after not having hosted or won a playoff game in that time since.
