Lancers sweep Algoma in weekend series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Windsor Lancers women's soccer team secured back-to-back wins over the Algoma Thunderbirds this weekend, earning six points with a 2-0 victory on Saturday (Sept. 27) and a 3-0 win on Sunday (Sept. 28) in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

SATURDAY

The Lancers kicked off their weekend with an assertive victory over the Thunderbirds on a sunny Saturday afternoon. From the opening whistle, the Lancers seized control of possession with Kailyn Robertson getting the game's first shot on goal just thirty seconds in. The pressure didn't let up, as Windsor kept the Thunderbirds on the back foot throughout the early stages. The Lancers came close in the 32nd minute, when Avery Comartin's effort rolled just wide off a pass from Hannah Clark. The Lancers persistence was finally rewarded when Comartin curled a beautiful shot into the top-left corner to give Windsor a 1-0 lead in the dying minutes of the half.

Algoma's best chance came early in the second half on a corner kick that required Lancers goalkeeper Izzy Barrette to punch the ball clear under pressure. Windsor came close again in the 77th minute when Sydney Warwick threaded a through ball to Kailyn Robertson who set up Vanessa Corry for a low shot that was stopped by Thunderbirds goalkeeper Victoria Fernandes. The Lancers breakthrough finally came in the 88th minute. After a long goal kick bounced favorably for Windsor, Robertson's shot was saved, but Comartin was there to bury the rebound and secure her brace—and her 9th goal of the season—to cement a 2-0 win.

SUNDAY

Returning to action less than 24 hours later, the Lancers picked up where they left off, controlling possession from the initial phases of the match. Kailyn Robertson nearly gave Windsor the lead in the 13th minute, just missing the target with a flicked effort inside the box. The pressure continued with several corners and dangerous deliveries into the area. Windsor found their breakthrough in the 23rd minute. A driven cross from the left ricocheted off an Algoma defender and into the back of the net, an own goal that rewarded the Lancers relentless attack and gave them a 1-0 advantage.

Windsor's dominance persisted into the second half and in the 55th minute, Zoe Penny delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Vanessa Corry on the left flank, who cut inside and curled a pinpoint shot into the bottom-right corner to double the Lancers lead. Algoma responded with increased pressure but couldn't find a way through Windsor's organized backline. The Lancers sealed the win in style in the 69th minute on a powerful strike from Robertson from outside the box that beat the keeper to make it 3-0 and secure all six points on the weekend.
