Unbeaten streak for Lancers snapped at Western

The University of Windsor Lancers women's volleyball team saw their perfect start to the season end this weekend (Nov. 21-22) with two losses in London, Ont against the Western Mustangs.

FRIDAY
The Lancers ran into a sharp Western Mustangs squad on Friday (Nov. 21) night, falling in straight sets at Alumni Hall. Set scores were 25-9, 25-16, 25-14.

Western's efficiency at the net proved the difference, as the Mustangs hit an impressive .398 overall while keeping Windsor to a .069 clip across the match.

Outside hitter Aryn Markett paced the Lancers with a team-best five kills, adding three digs for five points. Aliah Admans contributed four kills and seven digs, while Raiya Millin chipped in six points on three kills, two aces, and a block assist. Setter Danika Scharff finished with 16 assists and two digs.

The Mustangs saw four players reach double digits, led by Ava Ebert, who delivered a match-high 12 kills on an outstanding .632 hitting percentage for 15.5 points. Emma Buntic and Lael Harrison each added 11 points, while Nyla Tukker posted eight kills and three aces to round out Western's balanced attack. 

SATURDAY
The Lancers were unable to slow down the Mustangs offence on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 at Alumni Hall. Set scores were 25-16, 25-13, 25-17.

Windsor pushed at moments throughout the match but couldn't generate enough sustained pressure to disrupt a Western side that was strong both at the net and from the service line.

Fifth-year middle Jordyn Brearley led the Lancers with a team-high seven kills while adding three blocks for nine points. Maja Susa and Geneva Huisman each contributed five points, and setter Danika Scharff finished with 22 assists, five digs, and a service ace to guide the Windsor offence. Raiya Millin added 2.5 points on a kill, an ace, and a block assist.

Western displayed a balanced scoring effort, highlighted by Emma Buntic's dominant performance of 17 kills and 21.5 points, swinging at an efficient .438 clip. Nyla Tukker recorded 10 kills while sharing the team lead with 11 digs, and Lael Harrison added eight kills and 9.5 points. Setter Ava Coonfer orchestrated the Mustangs' attack with 36 assists, helping Western hit .372 for the match.

UP NEXT
Windsor now sits fourth in the OUA standings with a 6-2 (W-L) record. The Lancers return to action next weekend when they travel to Guelph, Ont. for a back-to-back series against the Guelph Gryphons. First serve on Friday, November 28 is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be watched online on oua.tv.
