Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lancers down Thunderbirds in winning weekend

The University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team built on their momentum from their thrilling Friday night win over Guelph with another dominant performance, defeating the Algoma Thunderbirds 76–43 on Saturday (Nov. 8) night to sweep their back-to-back homestand at the Toldo Lancer Centre.

Both teams traded early baskets to open the game, but the Lancers began to separate late in the first quarter. Windsor exploded offensively in the second, going on a massive scoring run while holding Algoma to limited chances and taking a 35–15 lead into halftime. The Lancers continued to pour it on in the third, outscoring the Thunderbirds 23–9 to build an insurmountable advantage. Despite a stronger offensive push from Algoma in the fourth, Windsor's lead proved too much as they cruised to a convincing 76–43 victory.

The Lancers dominated on both ends of the court, shooting 35.4% from the field and connecting on 10 three-pointers while forcing 10 steals and outrebounding Algoma. Windsor also held the Thunderbirds to just 43 points, including only nine in the first and third quarters and only six in the second. The Lancers were balanced offensively, led by Kali Grootenboer's double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Julia Chiarot added 13 points and Makenzie Fineman chipped in 10 off the bench. Teighan Stoukas contributed nine points and two steals, and Abby Cullion provided eight points and six rebounds to round out a deep team effort.

UP NEXT
The Lancers now hit the road for a two-game stretch through southern Ontario, facing the Brock Badgers and McMaster Marauders next week as they look to extend their winning streak and carry their momentum away from home. Friday (Nov. 14) night's game in St. Catharines, Ont. against Brock is set for 6 p.m. at the Bob Davis Gymnasium. The game can be streamed via oua.tv.
