Women's Basketball Sweeps Week Against Western

The Lancer women's basketball team extended their impressive winning streak to 8 games this weekend in back-to-back games against the Western Mustangs.  

WEDNESDAY STATS 

Kali Grootenboer had a standout showing, scoring 21 points and earning 6 rebounds. 

Reine Ndome and Julia Chiarot also hit double figures with 17 and 12 points respectively. 

Vanessa Budimunda was a force in the paint, recording a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. 

The women shot 45.8% from the field and 64.3% from the charity line.  

HOW IT HAPPENED WEDNESDAY 

It was a competitive first half, with Windsor holding a narrow 16-15 lead after the opening quarter. Western responded with a strong second quarter, outscoring the lancers 23-22, but Windsor carried a 38-38 advantage into halftime. 

The blue and gold took control in the second half, using a dominant third quarter to build their lead. Windsor outscored Western 17-11 in the frame, and then added 21 more points in the final quarter. The Lancer's greatest lead was in the final minute of the fourth quarter, as the women strove for a strong closing at home, capping the night off with a 76-63 final score.  

SATURDAY STATS 

Grootenboer again topped the game sheet with 20 points and 6 rebounds.  

Ndome was a strong presence in the paint, scoring 9 points, 5 assists, and 8 rebounds.  

It was a team effort as 9 players contributed to the offensive tallies. In all, the women shot 47.6% from the floor and 55.0% from the free throw line.  

HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY 

The opening half was a similar scene to Wednesday evening. Teams were evenly matched in the first quarter, with the score tied at 17-17 after the opening minutes. The Lancers edged ahead in the second, outscoring Western 14-13 to take a slim 31-30 lead into halftime.  

The third quarter saw the Lancers take the reigns, using a strong third-quarter push to widen their lead. The women put up 20 points in the frame while holding the Mustangs to 15. Then, the blue and gold raised the ceiling in the final frame with a game-high 27 points to seal the 14-point win.  

UP NEXT 

The Lancers take on Waterloo's cross-town rivals this week at the Toldo Lancer Centre. First, the blue and gold will take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday, February 12 at 6:00pm. Then, on Saturday, February 15, the women will battle against the Waterloo Warriors at 4:00pm.
