Lancers mourn the loss of alum Sheila Wright

The Windsor Lancer family is saddened by the passing of Lancer alumna and long-time supporter Sheila Wright on Sunday, February 16, 2025. She was 85 years old.

Sheila earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Assumption University in 1961 and was a member of the both our women's volleyball and basketball teams as a student-athlete.

Following her graduation, Sheila continued to positively impact Lancer Athletics & the University of Windsor as a decades long supporter, donor and fundraiser for our Lancer varsity teams.

A passionate advocate of athletics and of women in sport, Sheila volunteered for sporting events and championships on campus and was a member of the University of Windsor Alumni Sports Hall of Fame Executive Committee where she was a long-time committee member and volunteer. Her contributions to our alumni sports hall of fame were numerous and significant.

Sheila was also a dedicated UWindsor volunteer and lent her services to numerous events, including the University's annual Head Start program, Welcome BBQ and diploma framing initiatives. She served eight years as Director of the University of Windsor Alumni Board, has chaired the awards committee, served on the reunions and special events committees and the Bill Eansor Scholarship sub-committee.

In 2009, she was the recipient of the prestigious Clark Award which recognizes outstanding personal service by alumni and who have made significant commitments in time, energy and expertise by serving on University boards, committees or campaigns.

In 2011, the Lancers presented Sheila with the Richard Peddie Award which is presented annually to an individual who has provided outstanding leadership and made valuable contributions to the overall success of Lancer Athletics.

Outside of her University & Lancer commitments, Sheila's community involvement was remarkable, having been a member of the Leadership Advancement for Women in Sport steering committee, a Director of the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame & Museum while also serving on many other community boards and project committees.

Sheila impacted the lives of local youth during her 34-year teaching career where she coached basketball, volleyball, track and field, gymnastics and synchronized swimming and was head of the girls' physical education department for a combined 26 years.

Sheila was an outstanding person, an outstanding leader, an outstanding alumna of the University of Windsor, and forever a member of our Lancer family.

We'll miss you, Sheila.
