The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team battled through a competitive weekend, falling just short in a narrow 4-3 loss to UQTR on Friday before bouncing back with a high-scoring 6-5 victory over McGill on Saturday.
FRIDAY STATS
Aaron Shaw found the back of the net twice.
Ty Toews scored one goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED FRIDAY
It was a quiet opening frame for the blue and gold as UQTR took an early 1-point lead.
Shaw showed up for the Lancers early in the second period to even the score. One minute later, however, the Patriotes answered back to regain their 1-point lead. Toews then capitalized on a rebound off an offensive rush to tie things up at 2-2 heading into the third.
The pattern continued in the final frame, with UQTR netting an early goal to pull ahead. While the Patriotes and Lancers traded goals in the final 5 minutes, the Lancers could not complete the comeback, falling 4-3.
SATURDAY STATS
Keegan McMullen led the Lancer effort with 2 goals.
Johnny Ulicny, Dylan Schives, Ty Toews, and Will Ennis each added 1.
HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY
McGill opened the scoring 4 minutes in, but Windsor responded with a quick 2-goal burst. First, Toews sniped one bar-down to get the Lancers on the board before Ennis buried one from the point to put them ahead. Moments later, McMullen converted on a feed from Shaw to extend the lead to 3-1.
Teams kept up the energy in the second period. While McGill cut the deficit to one, Schives restored the two-goal cushion with a textbook wrister. The Redbirds responded by potting 2 to tie the game at 4 heading into the break.
In the third period, Ulicny broke the deadlock on the power play with a backhand riser. Then, McMullen went on a rush through the neutral zone to put the Lancers ahead 6-4.
While the Redbirds scored one in the final minutes, the Lancers held on to their 1-goal lead to close out the weekend with a strong 6-5 win.
