Softball sweeps weekend home games

The Lancer Softball team had a fantastic weekend in their first home stand of the season, going undefeated by sweeping the McMaster Marauders and the Brock Badgers.

With the sweep, the Lancers are now 6-4-0 on the season and sit in sixth place in the west division.

SATURDAY
In their home opener of the season, the Lancers hosted the McMaster Marauders for a rematch of last weekend's meeting. The Lancers came out hot in the first inning of the doubleheader and scored 5 runs on a single from Sienna Gale, a walk from Cylee Hickey, an RBI from Emma Hanley, a single from Jayde Melhuish-McGahan, a double from Ella Duncan-Reda, walks from Jacqueline Pento and Breanna Lee, and an RBI from Tia Nelson.

The blue & gold added to their lead in the second frame with a walk from Hanley and Melhuish-McGahan, single from Chloe Jones, hit by pitch from Jacqueline Pento, a few passed balls, and a sacrifice fly from Breanna Lee to make the score 10-0. The third inning saw Ava Merritt hit a single to get on base and then a huge homerun from rookie Chloe Jones to make the score 12-0.

The Marauders fought back to gain a run in the fourth inning, but they were no match for the strong Lancer defense and pitching and the game ended with a pickoff at first base with Jacqueline Pento throwing a laser to Jen Dufour for the final out to end the game in a mercy situation. Melhuish-McGahan earned the win on the mound with 0 hits and 0 runs given up over two innings of work while Jones earned the save with only 2 hits and 1 earned run over two innings.

The blue & gold got on the board early again in the second game of the doubleheader with a single from Nelson and a double from Jones to go up 1-0 in the opening frame. In the second inning, a Soleen DePape single, Ally Dufour reaching on an error, Sienna Gale singling, and a double from Nelson put the Lancers up 4-0. The Marauders did not go gently as they fought back to gain some runs, but insurance runs on a fielder's choice from Jones, a single from Melhuish-McGahan, and a long fly ball from Duncan-Reda secured the win for the Lancers. Dufour earned the win from the mound with two earned runs and 3 strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Melhuish-McGahan earned the save with two strikeouts over 2.1 innings of work.

SUNDAY
Sunday's matchup saw the Brock Badgers travel to Windsor for another rematch of last weekend's games. The first game began as a classic pitcher's duel until the Lancers broke it in the third inning with singles from Emma Hanley and Melhuish-McGahan and a double from Jones to go up 1-0. In the fifth frame, Hickey, Hanley, and Chloe Jones had back-to-back-to-back doubles that hit the fence and an RBI from Duncan-Reda to make the score 4-0. The Badgers fought back to push 1 run across the board, but it wasn't enough, and the blue & gold took the game 4-1. Melhuish-McGahan earned the win from the circle with eight hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts over seven innings of work.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lancers struck early to go up 2-0 in the first frame with bunts from Nelson and Hickey, a single from Hanley, and a double from Duncan-Reda. An eventful second inning saw the blue & gold build on their lead to go up 10-0 with singles from DePape, Nelson, Hanley, Jones, and Jen Dufour, as well as Hickey getting hit by a pitch, Duncan-Reda drawing a walk, and a Nelson double.

The Badgers battled back and responded with four runs of their own a couple innings later, but the Lancers had an answer again with doubles from Breanna Lee and Duncan-Reda and a single from Melhuish-McGahan to make the score 12-4. Brock continued to fight back, but strong defense allowed the Lancers to hold on and take the game 12-8 to complete the weekend sweep. Dufour earned the win from the mound with 3 strikeouts over seven innings of work.
