The University of Windsor Lancers softball team were narrowly defeated in two one-run games against the Laurier Golden Hawks at Mic Mac Park on Saturday, September 20. The Lancers fell by scores of 3-2 and 6-5.
SATURDAY - GAME ONE
Laurier struck early in the first game of the doubleheader, scoring in the top of the first to go up 1-0. The Lancers immediately answered back a
Chloe Jones double to cash
Cylee Hickey. The Golden Hawks responded with some hits of their own to make the score 3-1 in the second inning. A solo home run from Jones brought Windsor to within one run, but lockdown pitching and defense from both sides kept the remaining innings scoreless, concluding with a 3-2 final score.
Chloe Jones led Windsor offensively, going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in both Lancer runs.
Jayde Melhuish-McGahan pitched seven innings, not allowing an earned run while surrendering just four hits and striking out three.
SATURDAY - GAME TWO
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Golden Hawks once again struck first and were up 3-0 through three innings. In the top of the fifth, the Lancer offense started clicking with
Ella Duncan-Reda and Melhuish-McGahan singling to make the score 3-1. Melhuish-McGahan continued her strong day at the plate, tying the game in the seventh inning with a two-run double that scored Jones and
Ella Duncan-Reda.
The game went to three innings of international tiebreaker, with the teams trading runs every inning until the tenth, when the Golden Hawks broke the stalemate and pulled ahead to win 6-5.
Melhuish-McGahan went 3-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBI for Windsor.
Lauren Hickey and
Sienna Gale also knocked in a run each.
