Lancers squeeze out win at Laurier

The University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team came up with an 78-67 win in Waterloo, Ont. on Saturday (Jan. 17) night against the Laurier Golden Hawks.

GAME FLOW
Windsor opened the game with a 25-17 lead after the first quarter led by 12 points from Julia Chiarot on perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the field and the team outrebounding the Golden Hawks 16-8. Laurier kept the game close throughout, responding with a 17-15 second quarter to make it 40-34 Lancers entering halftime. The Lancers managed to give themselves some comfort with a third quarter in which they shot 73.3% and scored 27 points. Each team scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, but another strong rebounding frame from the Lancers, 12-6, made the difference and allowed the blue and gold to come away with the win.

STATS
Chiarot's hot start with 12 first-quarter points allowed her to tie her season- and career-high with 22 points. Kali Grootenboer extended her double-double streak to 11 games with 16 points on 12 rebounds, 10 of which were off the defensive glass, and blocked three shots for good measure. Mya Iriah and Maliyah Ogorek each scored 10 points, which marks Ogorek's career-high. Iriah grabbed six rebounds of her own, while Mackenzie Fineman had three assists.
