The University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team came up with an 78-67 win in Waterloo, Ont. on Saturday (Jan. 17) night against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
GAME FLOW
Windsor opened the game with a 25-17 lead after the first quarter led by 12 points from
Julia Chiarot on perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the field and the team outrebounding the Golden Hawks 16-8. Laurier kept the game close throughout, responding with a 17-15 second quarter to make it 40-34 Lancers entering halftime. The Lancers managed to give themselves some comfort with a third quarter in which they shot 73.3% and scored 27 points. Each team scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, but another strong rebounding frame from the Lancers, 12-6, made the difference and allowed the blue and gold to come away with the win.
STATS
Chiarot's hot start with 12 first-quarter points allowed her to tie her season- and career-high with 22 points.
Kali Grootenboer extended her double-double streak to 11 games with 16 points on 12 rebounds, 10 of which were off the defensive glass, and blocked three shots for good measure.
Mya Iriah and
Maliyah Ogorek each scored 10 points, which marks Ogorek's career-high. Iriah grabbed six rebounds of her own, while
Mackenzie Fineman had three assists.
Kate White paced Laurier with 17 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Brittyn Graves with 15 points and eight rebounds and Keira Aikman with 13 points. Martina Errazo swiped three steals.

The Lancers return to the Toldo Lancer Centre next weekend for the first regular-season game since Nov. 29. They will face the 13-1 TMU Bold, the fifth-ranked team in the country. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, January 23. Tickets for the game are available at
