The University of Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team swept the Trent Excalibur this weekend with a pair of four-set wins in Peterborough, Ont. on Jan. 30-31.
FRIDAY
The Lancers earned a road victory Friday night at the Trent Athletics Centre Gym, defeating the Excalibur in four sets to continue their strong season. Windsor rebounded after dropping the second set and closed out the match by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, and 25-20.
Windsor set the tone early with a composed opening frame, hitting .393 in the first set, and responded well after a brief dip in the second. The Lancers were especially sharp offensively in the third set, posting a .556 hitting percentage to regain control of the match before finishing the job in the fourth. Windsor's balance and efficiency at key moments proved to be the difference on the road.
Gustavo Siqueira led all players with 20 points, recording 18 kills on 32 swings while hitting an efficient .469 and adding two solo blocks.
Conaire Taub delivered a standout performance, finishing with 18 kills on 24 attempts for an impressive .667 hitting percentage, along with two assists and a block assist.
Darian Koskie contributed six kills, while
Chase Bridges added four points, including a service ace. Setter
Markus Law-Heese orchestrated the offence with 39 assists, helping the Lancers hit .361 as a team. Windsor was solid across the floor, posting 40 digs and four total blocks while limiting Trent to a .183 hitting percentage.
For the Excalibur, Jack Curtis paced the offence with 12 kills and 13.5 points, while Evan Burke added seven kills and 9.5 points on .400 hitting. Kevin Bowes was active at the net, recording two solo blocks and a block assist.
SATURDAY
The Lancers dropped the opening set to on Saturday but had a strong response to earn a four-set road victory over Trent on Saturday afternoon at the Trent Athletics Centre. Windsor responded with authority after a narrow first-set loss, taking the match by set scores of 24–26, 25–19, 25–17, and 25–22 to improve to 14–2 on the season.
After a tight opening frame that went the way of the hosts, the Lancers steadily imposed their rhythm on the match. Windsor cleaned up its offence in the middle sets, hitting .276 in the third and holding Trent to a .100 efficiency, before closing out the win with a composed fourth-set performance.
Offensively,
Gustavo Siqueira led all players with 17 points, recording 14 kills on a .370 hitting percentage while adding three service aces and 11 digs in an all-around effort.
Conaire Taub chipped in 12 kills and seven digs, while
Noah Nsolo contributed eight points highlighted by three solo blocks at the net.
Markus Law-Heese guided the Windsor attack with 36 assists, also adding eight digs and two service aces. Defensively,
Noah Koskie anchored the back row with a match-high 17 digs as the Lancers finished with 53 digs as a team.
For Trent, Jack Curtis and Charlie Winser each reached double digits with 12 points apiece, while Evan Burke was a presence at the net with six solo blocks. Brock Drover added 11 points in the loss.
