The University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team earned a convincing 93–74 road win over the Western Mustangs on Wednesday (Jan. 7) evening at Alumni Hall in London, Ont.
GAME FLOW
Windsor controlled the tempo from the opening tip, taking a 26–19 lead after the first quarter and carrying a 48–41 advantage into halftime. The Lancers continued to apply pressure in the second half, outscoring Western 21–18 in the third quarter before pulling away in the final frame with a 24–15 fourth quarter to secure the victory.
The Lancers shooting efficiency proved to be the difference, as Windsor shot 46.4% from the field and an outstanding 15-for-24 (62.5%) from three-point range. Ball movement was also a key factor, with Windsor recording 29 assists on the night, while their defensive effort forced 18 Western turnovers.
STATS
Kali Grootenboer led Windsor with a dominant performance, finishing with a career-high 27 points and 14 rebounds, while adding seven blocks on the defensive end. Grootenboer had a 28-point outing in an exhibition game against the Manitoba Bisons on January 3, and follows that up with her career regular-season best mark. Her double-double streak now sits at eight games. Leah Tate delivered a strong perimeter showing, knocking down eight three-pointers on her way to 24 points, giving her the second-most threes made by a Lancer in a single game, just behind Dranadia Roc's nine in 2006. Teighan Stoukas guided the offense with 10 assists, and Julia Chiarot, Mya Iriah, and Jade Hunte each chipped in nine points.
For Western, Renee Armstrong led the Mustangs with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Natalie VanHeeswyk provided a spark off the bench with 14 points. Western struggled from long range, shooting 6-for-26 from beyond the arc, which limited their ability to keep pace with Windsor's hot shooting.
UP NEXT
With the win, the Lancers improve to 10–2 on the season while the Mustangs fall to 6–6. Windsor will look to carry this momentum forward as they continue OUA regular season action this weekend on the road in Guelph, Ont. against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be streamed online via oua.tv.
