Lancers drop home opener to visiting Lions

The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team dropped their home opener 74-61 to the York Lions Friday night at the Toldo Lancer Centre.

The blue and gold are now 1-1 through their first two games.

STATS
Fourth-year forward Ella Okubasu was the best player on the court Friday night, posting season highs in points (20), rebounds (9), and steals (3). Chantelle Stuart complemented her with 17 points and team-high performances in steals (5) and assists (5).

Guard Leah Tate continued her hot start by leading the blue and gold in points (17) and assists (3), while centre Kali Grootenboer (13) and guard Mackenzie Fineman (6) recorded game-high marks in rebounds and steals.

With Friday's result, Windsor's four-game winning streak versus York has ended.

GAME FLOW
As they have throughout an undefeated start, the visiting Lions roared to another hot start early, scoring 35 of their 74 points in the first half. Fourth-year marketing student Ella Okubasu was a huge part of this, contributing 12 of her 20 points and six of her nine rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second and third quarters, the Lancer offence started showing some signs of life, scoring 36 of their 61 points in that 20-minute stretch. Odette School of Business student Leah Tate was Windsor's biggest scoring threat of the game and made her biggest mark here, scoring 13 of her 17 points alongside two steals.

However, York maintained their lead and solidified the win in the second half by adding 21 and 18 points in the third and fourth quarters. Despite committing more fouls, their ability to convert field goals (41.4% to 28.4%) and three-pointers (25.8% to 14.3%) at a much higher rate than Windsor by finding open spaces and driving to the net routinely was ultimately the difference.

The visitors won the scoring battle in all four quarters, too, and never relinquished control of their lead after going up 5-2 3:12 into the initial frame.

UP NEXT
The Lancers will host the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, October 31st at 4:00 p.m. before a four-game road trip at TMU, Toronto, Queen's, and Ontario Tech from November 6-14.
