The University of Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team are back in the Forsyth Cup for the second year in a row, facing off against the Queen's Gaels as they look for their first OUA Championship. First serve at the Toldo Lancer Centre is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
The Lancers entered the playoffs as the top team in the OUA with an 18-2 (W-L) record. They took down the Waterloo Warriors in the quarterfinals in four sets and did the same to the Western Mustangs in the semifinals. Windsor has never won an OUA Championship in program history, although they have two silvers in the past three seasons, including a defeat to the Gaels in this very game last season.
Windsor has a well-rounded group with strengths at all positions. Middle
Darian Koskie led the country in hitting percentage (.475) in the regular season,
Markus Law-Heese's 9.72 assists per set rank third in the OUA, and
Gustavo Siqueira's 3.63 kills per set are third in the province and fifth in U SPORTS.
Head coach
James Gravelle was named the OUA Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and third time in four years, while Koskie and Siqueira were named to the first all-star team and Law-Heese to the second team.
The Gaels finished the regular season with a 14-6 record, placing third in the OUA. They swept the York Lions in straight sets in the quarterfinals and defeated the Nipissing Lakers in the semifinals. Four of their six regular season losses have come on the road.
Queen's players Reed Venning was a first-team all-star, Nikola Mitrovic the second team, and Carson Francis was named to the all-rookie team. Setter Chris Zimmerman was awarded the Champion of EDI Award.
