Coming off an OUA playoff berth in 2025, the University of Windsor Lancers women's soccer team came up short in their 2026 home opener at Alumni Stadium, dropping a 2-0 decision to the York Lions.
GAME FLOW
Due to the Lions ball movement and ability to find open lanes in the final third, Windsor relied heavily on its aggressiveness to break up plays defensively, highlighted by
Ella Vinzenz,
Jane Pozzi, and
Ava Facchineri's yellow cards in the first and second halves.
Offensively, the Lions were led by third-year forward and biology student Nia Fleming-Thompson, who potted two goals in the 17th and 48th minutes. Overall, York had five shots on net.
Generating a game-high seven shots on target, the Lancers created havoc for York's back three defenders throughout the game, but
Olivia Corazza and
Jane Pozzi, among others, were unable to finish scoring threats past Charlotte Phillips. Windsor's chances were highlighted by the younger Pozzi hitting the left crossbar following a free kick from
Ava Facchineri just before the hour mark.

Izzy Barrette made three saves in the contest, while her counterpart Charlotte Phillips made seven stops.
Jane Pozzi led the blue and gold with four shots, and
Michaela Marenchin and
Maria Vizirakis had two shots on goal each. Nia Thompson-Fleming had both York goals and four shots on goal.
