The University of Windsor men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday (Sep. 13) afternoon after an intense battle at Alumni Stadium.
GAME FLOW
Laurier came out fighting with a shot on goal early in the game saved by Windsor's
Nicholas Zanin. Both teams fought for possession of the ball throughout the first half, with Windsor trying to open up opportunities for a goal.
Ottavio Liburdi and
Matthew Chimienti had shots that did not quite meet the net.
Windsor's
Wilchrist Abdo was issued a yellow card leading to a Laurier corner kick which was quickly defended by the Lancers, keeping the game scoreless at 0-0. Shortly after, Laurier's Divraj Sandhu was also issued a yellow card.
Both teams managed a few more shots on goal leading up to halftime with Laurier receiving one more yellow card issued to Arjan Kehla.
Heading into the second half goalless, the teams battled it out with both sides taking shots on goal early on. Laurier's Armaan Patel got the first goal of the game in the 66th minute to give Laurier the lead against the Lancers.
The aggression continued between Windsor and Laurier, with Laurier's Demetrios Saratsiotis and Windsor's Liburdi each receiving a yellow card.
Windsor created a few more scoring opportunities against Laurier but were unable to find the net, ultimately falling 1-0.
STATS
Windsor outshot Laurier 10-7 and held a 4-2 advantage in the opening half. The Lancers also led in corner kicks, 7-3. Windsor recorded eight fouls compared to Laurier's five.
Lancer goaltender
Nicholas Zanin made three saves against Laurier while playing all 90 minutes. Laurier recorded seven saves leading to the team's victory.
Windsor drops 1-5-0 in OUA conference play with the loss, while Laurier moves to second overall in the OUA West Division at 3-1-1.
