Lancers rally late to down Golden Hawks

The University of Windsor Lancers women's soccer team fought back late against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday (Sep. 13) afternoon at Alumni Field, taking the victory with a 4-3 win.

GAME FLOW
Just four minutes into the game, the Lancers took the lead on a corner kick from Olivia Corazza that was redirected into the Laurier net to record Windsor's first goal of the game and Corazza's fifth of the season.

Laurier reacted with more offensive pressure, tying the game with a goal by Ashley Greco in the 11th minute. Laurier took the opportunity to keep their offensive play going, taking two shots on goal which were both saved by Windsor goalkeeper Izzy Barrette.

The Lancers took back control with two shots on goal that were saved by Laurier goalkeeper Mya Brodrecht. Windsor took back the lead with Delia Caruso scoring her first goal as a Lancer assisted by Olivia Corazza. Heading into halftime, Windsor held onto the lead with a score of 2-1.

Laurier took control early in the second half, with Jessica Breda evening the scoreboard with a goal just under five minutes in, followed by another Laurier goal to suddenly take a 3-2 lead.

Windsor responded offensively, coming back to attack in the last 25 minutes of the game. Taking a header from a corner-kick, Jane Pozzi brought the score to 3-3. The Lancers maintained possession of the ball, bringing impressive plays against the net met with saves from Brodrecht. The Lancers regained the lead  with Autumn Allen scoring the fourth goal at 72 minutes. The last 15 minutes saw a tight battle between the teams, with the Lancers ultimately holding onto the lead and ending the game in a 4-3 victory.

STATS
Windsor and Laurier took a total of 11 shots each, with Windsor taking the lead with seven shots on goal compared to Laurier's six. The Lancers recorded five corner kicks, three resulting in a goal. Laurier earned two corner kicks.

Windsor goalkeeper Izzy Barrette and Laurier goalkeeper Mya Brodrecht recorded three saves each. Zoe Penny, Ella Vinzenz and Ava Facchineri each recorded a shot for the Lancers. Ashley Greco and Jessica Breda each scored a goal for Laurier, with Windsor surrendering an own goal.

Windsor improves to 2-3-1 (W-L-T) in OUA play while Laurier sits at 3-2-0.
