The University of Windsor Lancer soccer program hosts the York Lions on Saturday in their first game at Alumni Field of the 2010 season. The Lancer women will kick off against the York at 1:00pm, while the Men take to the field against the Lions at 3:15pm.
Both Lancers teams had strong opening weekends on the road last week following a very successful preseason which saw the men's program got 3-1 and the women go 4-0 against strong NCAA competition.
The Lancers men will look to continue their strong start from last week which saw them shut out both the Guelph Gryphons, and the McMaster Marauders. Goalkeeper Dan Mendonca made fourteen saves in his first two shut outs of the year as Windsor defeated the Gryphons 1-0, and come to a 0-0 draw against McMaster.
The 2009 version of the men's soccer squad went 8-1-5 in the regular season, good enough to land them the second seed in the Western division. The Lancers went 1-0-1 against the Lions last season, the win being a 4-3 barn burner at York University.
The Lancer women are still looking for their first victory of the young 2010 season. After two ties in their opening weekend the Lancers will look to reverse the trend from a year ago this saw them go winless against the Lions.
After a 4-5-5 season in 2009, the 2010 Lancers will rely heavily on 4th year goal keeper Rebecca Singer who was injured for the 2009 calendar. Alongside defender Amy Blencowe, Sara Kox and April LeClaire will help anchor the back four. With Mereasa Brownlie and Tiffany Phillips in the mid field, the Lancers will prove to be a difficult challenge to anyone in the league.
Game time is set for 1:00pm for the women and 3:15pm for the men on Saturday afternoon against the Lions. Sunday the men will be back in action against the brand new UOIT Ridgebacks who joined the league this season. Kick off set for 3:15 at Alumni Field.
