Lancers remain undefeated with 1-0 victory over Mustangs

Marianne Wright propelled the Windsor Lancer women's soccer to a 1-0 win over the Western Mustangs Sunday afternoon on Alumni Field.

Wright's late goal in the 89th minute came from a shot inside the 18-yard box into the bottom corner of the net to beat Western keeper Melanie Oberholzer and give the Lancers the win.

With the win the Lancers remain undefeated with a 2-0-2 record and sit in third place in the OUA West.

The Lancers dominated the Mustangs throughout the first half, maintaining ball possession and using a strong defense to prevent Western from registering a single shot.

The Lancers had a number of chances to get on the board yet failed to find the net, as the score remained tied at zero heading into the break.

The second half became much more intense as the Lancers and Mustangs battled back and forth trying to gain possession of the ball. Windsor had a number of quality scoring opportunities from Heather Daichendt, Candace Garrod, and Meresa Brownlie but could not convert the ball into the net.

With just a few minutes remaining, Windsor keeper Rebecca Singer was forced to make a great save on a Western striker to keep her team in the game, and help the Lancers to a 1-0 victory just a few minutes later.

Singer registered three saves for the Lancers for her second straight shut-out, while Oberholzer made 8 saves for the Mustangs.

Windsor will host the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday September 25th at 1:00pm, followed by the McMaster Marauders on Sunday. Game time is also at 1:00pm.
