The Lancer men's soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-2 draw against the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday, following a 2-0 loss to Guelph on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers finished the season with a 5-5-6 record and a fifth place finish in the OUA West division.
Against the Gryphons, the game was very open right from the start with both teams wasting no chances to get shots aimed at goal. Windsor's best chances came from corner kicks and long balls forcing Guelph goalie Chad Paparoni to make four saves alone in the first half to keep the Lancers off the board.
Guelph created several good chances themselves, also putting four shots on target in the half. However, the teams went into the half tied at zero.
In the second, the Lancers struggled to shot the ball on target, while Guelph managed to put two behind Lancer goaltender
Dan Mendonca.
Guelph would get on the scoreboard in the 72nd minute when midfielder Tim Flynn headed the ball in Mendonca and just under the bar for his second goal of the season.
With just one minute remaining in regulation time, Flynn would score his second of the game to secure the win for the home school.
Overall, Mendonca made 6 saves in net for the Lancers against Guelph.
The Lancers saw themselves in a come from behind position again on Sunday against UOIT, as just 8 minutes into the game, UOIT striker Paul Craven was able to put one past the keeper into the bottom right corner as Mendonca was forced to come out and challenge the play, giving the Ridgebacks the 1-0 lead.
Immediately following the Ridgebacks first goal, Mendonca came up with two big saves keeping the game within one.
Not discouraged, the Lancers charged right back when in the 11th minute Windsor's Mike Pio had a solid chance when he rung his shot off of the post. Just seven minutes later, Pio was able to capitalize a in the 18th minute, after receiving a well-placed through ball from midfielder, Mike Watson to tie the game at one.
The Lancers had a couple of attempts early in the second half, most coming off of rebounds from their own corner kicks.
Paul Frenken and Eric Cirovski each had a shot on net, but the Ridgebacks keeper Matt Caldaroni was able to come up with the saves.
Windsor took the lead in the 81st minute when Watson dribbled through the UOIT defense and placed one into the bottom left corner, making the score 2-1.
UOIT was able to respond in the last couple of minutes, as UOIT midfielder Matt Craven shot one into the top corner of the goal in the 88th minute, making the final 2-2.
Windsor will head to London on Wednesday for the first round of the OUA playoffs against the Western Mustangs at 8:00pm at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
