Lancers split opening weekend at home

The Lancer women's soccer team split a pair of games this weekend against Waterloo and Laurier to open the home portion of their 2011 schedule.

On Saturday, the Lancers shut-out the visiting Waterloo warriors 2-0 on Alumni Field.

The Lancers had a chance to get on the board early in the game, as Kelly Riccardi crossed the ball to her sister Bella, but the younger Riccardi was unable to connect.

Kelly had another chance later in the half, when in the 43rd minute Candace Garrod dribbled the ball up field, drawing a couple defenders and crossing the ball over to Riccardi. Riccardi accepted the pass successfully and fired the ball past Warriors' goaltender Lesia Bandura to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead heading into the half

The Lancers continued to pressure the Warriors in the second half, including a few opportunities from OUA all-star Sarah Kox whose free kick soared just over the net.

Windsor secured the win when Kelly's pass connected with newcomer Alyshia Phillips, to put the Lancers up by two

The Warriors increased pressure towards the end of the game but the Lancers keeper Rebecca Singer and a solid Lancer defense were able to maintain the shut out.

On Sunday, the Lancers took an early 1-0 lead before falling to the No. 2 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks.

Tiffiany Phillips scored her first goal of the season just eight minutes into the match, to surprise the visiting team and give the Lancers a one goal lead that held until the second half.

In the second, Laurier's Emily Brown scored just four minutes into the half to tie the game and increase intensity levels on the field.

Both teams had scoring chances, but it was the Golden Hawks who capitalized. With fifteen minutes left in regulation, Krista Cellucci snuck the ball past Singer to give the visitors the go-ahead goal.

The Lancers will hit the road again next weekend, when they take on the Western Mustangs on Sunday September 18th at 1:00pm in London.
