Lancer Women's Soccer opens season at McMaster on Saturday

The Lancers open at home on Saturday Sept 10th vs Waterloo at 1pm
The Windsor Lancers Women's and Men's Soccer programs will open their seasons on the road this weekend against the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton.

For the Lancer Women, a 5-4-5 record in the OUA's west division was enough to get the Lancers into the post-season, but didn't afford them the opportunity of a home game.

“We'd like to get our wins back-up,” Lancer coach Angelo Verardi said.

“We were very competitive last year but we'd like to be even better.”

The Lancers open the 2011 season on Saturday in Hamilton at 1 p.m. against the team that ended their 2010 campaign in the McMaster Marauders.

“Hopefully, we can go back and exert a little revenge,” Verardi said.

The Marauders finished second at 8-4-2 last year and bounced the Lancers from the OUA quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory.

Sunday, the Lancers are in St. Catharines for a game against the Brock Badgers.

Windsor returns nine starters including their entire midfield of Meresa Brownlie, Nicole Dowell, Kelly Riccardi and Emilie Glanz.

In an effort to bump up the win total, the Lancers are going with a 4-4-2 system with two strikers up front in Candace Garrod and Tiffany Phillips.

“In retrospect, in looking back, we were not getting the opportunities we feel we should have up front,” Verardi said.

“We feel with two up there we'll get more and we're confident in our midfield.”

Keeper Rebecca Singer has recovered from a knee injury that caused her to miss a significant portion of last year's action and she's assisted by a veteran defence that includes Cassandra Quayson, Sara Kox, Caroline Lott and Amy Blencowe.

Quayson is stepping in for fifth-year April Leclair who opted not to return this fall.

“She's calm on the ball which I like and she has experience,” Verardi said.

Joining a veteran roster are two local recruits in centre-midfielder Robyn Preston from St. Joseph and striker Bella Riccardi from St. Anne.

“We'll probably need to use them,” Verardi said.

“It will be a matter of getting them up to speed in terms of the OUA.”
