The two-time defending CIS national champion Lancer Women's Basketball team got their 2012-13 exhibition schedule started with a bang as they captured the Dalhousie Centennial Subway Tournament Classic in Halifax over the weekend.
The Lancers went 3-0 in the tournament with wins over Acadia, Dalhousie, and St. Mary's, while also earning a win against St. Francis Xavier prior to the start of the tournament.
Against St. FX, the Lancers dressed only nine players for the contest, as rookies Cailtyn Longmuir,
Andrea Kiss and
Kim Moroun saw a lot of playing time in their first-ever CIS competition. Second year
Tessa Kreiger was the leading scorer in the victory, while
Jessica Clemencon had 13 and
Korissa Williams, who started as PG in the absence of
Miah-Marie Langlois, had 11.
In tournament action, Windsor opened up the Dalhousie Classic against the reigning AUS champion Acadia Axewomen. In their last meeting at the 2012 national championships, the Lancers easily defeated the Axewomen 94-46. This time around, however, it was a harder fought victory, as Acadia returned most of last year's roster and added 2055 NCAA National Championship MVP transfer Emily Nkosi from Baylor University.
With all 12 athletes dressing, the Lancers came out on top 80-73. Clemencon led the way with 28 points and 6 rebounds and was named player of the game.
Korissa Williams followed with 17 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals, while Langlois chipped in 11 pts, and 9 rebounds. Jocelyn Larocque also had 11 pts and 6 assists, and rookie
Andrea Kiss had 9 points.
In game two, the Lancers took on the host Dalhousie Tigers. In another tight game, the Lancers used a 25-12 fourth quarter surge to defeat the Tigers 69-55.
Clemencon finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds, while Williams had 15 pts, and 6 steals to be named player of the game.
Jocelyn LaRocque also chipped in with 10 points and
Tessa Kreiger 10 rebounds.
Less than 12 hours later, Windsor was back in the gym to take on St. Mary's, the only other undefeated team at the tournament who are led by national team point guard Justine Colley.
The Lancers were all business in the finale as they earned an impressive 86-59 win. Clemencon was once again the top scorer with 21 points, while Williams chipped in 18 to once again be player of the game.
Andrea Kiss rounded out her impressive tournament debut with 9 points.
Jessica Clemencon was also named tournament MVP for her strong performance over the weekend.
The Lancers will next travel to Regina to participate in the Cougar Invitational Oct 26-28th.
