Lancer Hockey sweeps Brock and Western

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lancer men's hockey team earned two impressive road victories over the weekend as they defeated the Brock Badgers 4-1 on Friday night, and the Western Mustangs 5-4 on Saturday night in London.

Against the Badgers, Matt Beaudion put the Lancers up very early in the first period when he found a loose puck that was kicking around the crease and put it in the back of the net.

Just three minutes later, the Badgers would tie it up on a goal scored by Matt Abercrombie.

Later in the first period, the Lancers would again get the puck in the crease, and this time forward Myles Doan would tap this one in sending the teams into the locker room with the Lancers leading 2-1.

After a scoreless second period, the Badgers came out firing in the third. They put a lot of pressure on the Windsor goalie Matt Murphy who kept his head on a swivel turning away every puck sent in his direction.

With just under 8 minutes remaining, DJ Turner would score a goal on the power play to secure the win for the Lancers. Drew Palmer and Spencer Pommels were credited with the assists.

An empty net goal was scored by Brett Vandehogen and assisted by Josh Graves and Brett Oliphant with just 7 seconds left in the game. This would make the final 4-1 in favour of the Lancers.

Matt Murphy earned the win in net for the Lancers.

On Saturday, it was a back and forth match-up between the Lancers and their rivals the Western Mustangs.

Shots on goal finished at 45-40 for Windsor, and three goals found the back of the net each period.

D.J. Turner beat Western goaltender John Cullen and gave the Lancers the opening goal shortly into the first period. Mustang Adam Stoykewych scored Western's first goal halfway into the first to quickly tie the game 1-1, but Spencer Pommels helped the Lancers regained their edge and ended the opening period up 2-1.

In the second, the Mustangs took a 3-2 lead before Brett Oliphant scored for the Lancers to tie the game at three heading into the third period.

The final period started off the opening play as Turner scored his second goal of the game and put the Lancers ahead from the get go. Western followed up in the same minute, however, taking advantage of an unprepared Windsor defense line and beat Lancer goalie Parker Van Buskirk.

The Lancers capitalized on a powerplay opportunity midway through the third period as Steve Ferry scored the go ahead goal for the Lancers.

Windsor went two for four on powerplays as oppose to the Mustangs` one for four effort.

The Lancers will return home next Friday night when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at 7:30pm at Windsor Arena.
