Lancers season ends with loss to Guelph

WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's soccer season came to a halt in the first round of the OUA post-season, as the men fell to the Guelph Gryphons 2-0 in extra time on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

The opening half started off with an intense pace but remained evenly matched throughout, although Windsor seemed to have an advantage in the latter stages.  In particular, Christian Mayorga had a number of scoring opportunities but could not connect.  The score remained 0-0 at halftime.

The second half began much like the first, with both teams fighting for the first goal.  Mayorga again had many attempts yet none were able to get past Gryphons goalkeeper Chad Paparoni.  The game took a chippy turn, and the referee was forced to hand out a couple of cards.  Still, neither side could find the goal, and the game went into overtime.

Although the Lancers looked dangerous early on, it would be the Gryphons' Robbie Murphy breaking the tie at the 103' mark of the contest.  Murphy connected again 10 minutes later, capitalizing on a breakdown in defense as Windsor pressed for the equalizer, to put the game on ice and send Guelph to the OUA quarter-finals.

The Lancers finished the regular season with a 7-6-3 record, good enough for fourth place in the OUA West conference.
