Lancers humble the Blues, move to 6-0

Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- Korissa Williams had a game-high 21 points, Laura Mullins added 18 and was 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, and the Windsor Lancers women's basketball team disposed of the Toronto Varsity Blues in dominating fashion, tallying an 85-54 victory at the St. Denis Centre on Saturday evening.

Miah-Marie Langlois tallied a triple-double, including 13 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds, and Jessica Clemencon added 10 points for the Lancers (6-0), who maintain their place at the top of the OUA West standings.  Liane Bailey tallied 12 points to lead the Blues in a losing cause.

Mullins drained a three and followed that up with a layup after the Blues committed a turnover on their next possession, allowing the Lancers to take a 9-0 early in the contest.  This prompted Toronto to call a timeout in order to stop the momentum.  However, Jocelyn LaRocque nailed a three coming out of the break, extending the lead into double-digits before five minutes had passed in the game.  A buzzer beater by Langlois gave the home side a 23-10 advantage going into the second quarter.

The Lancers continued to play strong defence early in the second, deflecting many of the Blues' passes and forcing turnovers, not allowing the visitors to find any sort of flow on offence.  The defending champions continued to bring the pressure, and converted many of Toronto's mistakes into points.  A layup by Clemencon gave the hosts a 20-point advantage with still plenty of basketball to be played in the first half.  The Blues cut into the advantage momentarily, but two three-pointers in a row from Mullins late in the quarter quickly negated any ground Toronto was hoping to make up before the half.  Windsor took a hefty 46-21 lead into the second half.

The Lancers shot 48.8% in the first half, compared to 22.2% from the Varsity Blues.  Mullins finished the first two quarters with 14 points, including hitting 4-of-7 three-pointers to lead all players in the half.

The Blues looked to get back in the contest early in the third quarter, scoring the first nine points of the period.  After a three-pointer by Toronto's Liane Bailey, Lancers Coach Chantal Vallee called timeout to get the women back on track.  The Lancers responded, going on an 10-2 run to regain their sizeable advantage.  Windsor took a 68-39 lead into the final quarter of play.

Rookie Andrea Kiss got in on the action in the fourth quarter.  The Tecumseh, Ont. native drained a jumper and picked up another layup a few possessions later in the period.    Fellow freshman Caitlyn Longmuir nailed a shot from beyond the arc in the quarter as well.  Kiss and Longmuir (Kingsville, Ont.) finished with four and five points respectively.

The Lancers will  travel to Kingston, Ont. next weekend for a match-up with the Queen's Gaels to close out the first half of the season.  The women will resume their regular season home schedule on January 3, when they welcome the Laurier Golden Hawks to St. Denis Centre.
