Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.-
Jessica Clemencon and
Korissa Williams each recorded 16 points, while
Jocelyn LaRocque added 12, and the defending CIS champion Windsor Lancers opened their regular season with a 58-53 victory over the No. 4 Carleton Ravens in front of a raucous crowd at the St. Denis Centre.
Before the game, the women were honoured with a banner raising ceremony commemorating their second consecutive CIS title last season. The defending champions looked to find their footing following the festivities, as the visiting Ravens picked up the contest's first three buckets.
Miah-Marie Langlois (Windsor) sparked the crowd with a quick steal that led to two points from the foul line by Clemencon. The Lancers continued to thrive, as Langlois and Clemencon (St. Rambert, France) connected for another basket. Directly after, Langlois forced another Carleton turnover, and Ravens Coach Taffe Charles called timeout in an effort to halt the momentum after Windsor took the lead. The visitors held their own throughout the quarter, and held a 19-17 lead going into the second period.
The Ravens extended the advantage to double-digits just over two minutes into the second, not allowing the Lancers to score until four minutes had passed in the quarter. Clemencon had some struggles from the foul-line in the second quarter, missing six straight free throws in the period. However, the former CIS player of the year came back to fight off Ravens defenders in the low post for a lay-up, and would finish the half with a team-high 10 points.
LaRocque (Windsor) brought the crowd to its feet with a basket from beyond the arc that cut the lead to three. The hometown native drained a long two on Windsor's next possession, and Williams drove the lane for a lay-up that erased a 10-point deficit, giving Windsor its first lead of the second quarter. The two squads would trade the advantage in the latter stages of the half, with Carleton taking a 31-30 lead into the locker rooms. Guard Alyson Bush had a half-high 12 points for the Ravens, who shot just 28% in the first half but were a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line. The Lancers shot 40% from the field in the first and second quarter.
The offense dried up for both squads in the third quarter, as the teams combined for just 20 points in the period. However, at the 6:25 mark, Clemencon became the all-time Lancers women's basketball leading scorer, passing Dranadia Roc who set the previous mark with 1,129 in her three-year career. Both teams continued to shore up their respective defenses, and the Lancers held a slight 42-39 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The women exploded at the beginning of the fourth, extending the lead to nine just three minutes into the quarter. After a steal and easy layup by Williams (Windsor), Coach Charles responded with another timeout to stem the Lancers tide. However, the Ravens had trouble breaking through Windsor's defence that held Carleton to just five points through the first seven minutes of the final quarter.
The Ravens hurt themselves down the stretch, missing key free throws that allowed the Lancers to maintain their small lead. After a great drive and lay-in by Williams, Elizabeth Roach notched a critical jumper from beyond the arc that brought the advantage down to three.
However, that was as close as the Ravens would get, as some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch put the game on ice. Langlois finished the game with seven points and six steals, while Clemencon had a game-high eight rebounds. Bush tallied a game-high 18 points in a losing cause for the Ravens.
The Lancers are back on the St. Denis court tomorrow evening, as they will take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Saturday's game will a rematch of the OUA final last year, and the Lancers will be looking for revenge after falling to the Gee-Gees in Ottawa. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
