Box Score The Lancer Men's Hockey team dropped a hard fought 2-0 decision to the No. 4 Western Mustangs on Sunday night in game three of the OUA West Conference Finals in London.
Despite the loss, Windsor will now advance to the OUA Bronze medal game to be played next weekend in Quebec against UQTR. The winner of the bronze medal game will earth a berth to the CIS National Championship tournament in Frederiction, New Brunswick at the end of the month.
"We can't dwell on this loss," Lancers captain
Matt McCready said. "Our focus now is on the game against UQTR. It doesn't matter the way you get to Nationals, we just want to get there. That's what we've wanted from the start."
On Sunday night, a physical first period allowed the tempo to be set early as both teams came out to play at puck drop. Neither team was able to get one by the solid goaltending provided by the Lancer
Parker Van Buskirk and the Mustangs' Josh Unice as the two teams battled through a scoreless first two periods.
Zach Harnden gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead 11 seconds into the third right off the opening faceoff.
Less then a minute later, Windsor came close to tying the game as the puck trickled over Unice's shoulder but over the net.
The Mustangs would seal the deal at 15:03 of the final period as Harnden dished the puck to teammate Kevin Baker who was able to one-time the puck past Van Buskirk for the 2-0 lead.
Windsor pressed hard for the remainder of the game but they were not able to beat Unice.
"It's frustrating, but I'm proud of the guys and how far we've come," added McCready. "We going to rebound from this and focus on UQTR."
